Community Clay: Redefining Life Through Thoughtful Ceramics

At Community Clay, we believe in curating a meaningful life through the objects that surround us. Every item you own plays a role in shaping your understanding of the world and your place within it. We invite you to ask: How do you design your life?

Gabrielle Burke, founder of Community Clay, working on a pottery wheel in her Vancouver ceramics studio. She is smiling while shaping clay, surrounded by shelves filled with handmade ceramic pieces and pottery tools. Community Clay is an inclusive, artist-run pottery studio offering accessible ceramics workshops and classes.

The Philosophy of Community Clay

Our philosophy centers on creating beautiful, meaningful objects that enhance daily rituals. Studio founder Gabrielle describes this connection:

"I have curated a beautiful life for myself, doing what I love, surrounded by incredible people, and creating thoughtful objects for those who truly understand their value. I love how people form intimate relationships with these items—cradling a mug as they sip their morning coffee or tea. These objects have meaning, and they make everyday moments special."

Meet Gabrielle: Founder & Artist

Gabrielle, the creative force behind Community Clay, drives the studio’s vision, operations, and product designs. She also leads classes and workshops to share her passion for ceramics with others.

Gabrielle's Journey in Ceramics

Gabrielle discovered her love for clay in 2004 through self-directed exploration. After earning a degree from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2011, she founded Community Clay (formerly g ceramic & co.). Her fascination lies in how ceramic objects, like mugs and bowls, play an essential role in our daily lives—becoming extensions of our routines and relationships.

Expertise & Craftsmanship

Gabrielle works with all types of clay across various firing temperatures, specializing in custom lighting installations, large vases, and bowls. Her efficient approach to ceramics emphasizes mastering the fundamentals:

"When you truly understand what's happening between your fingertips and the clay, you can create anything. Instead of fighting the clay, let go, start fresh, and learn from the process."

As an instructor, Gabrielle excels in helping students of all levels identify challenges and grow their skills. Her expertise spans beginner to intermediate techniques, including plates, bowls, handles, and large forms.
